I became a single mother shortly after giving birth to my son. The relationship I had with his father was unstable long before my pregnancy, but everything intensified once I found out I was expecting. After our son arrived, his jealousy, lack of support, and refusal to grow into fatherhood made it clear that I had to make a hard choice. Walking away wasn’t easy, but I knew I deserved better—and more importantly, so did my son. You can read more about my journey here: Motherhood and Reinvention.

This story is about being a single mom and finding strength in circumstances I never imagined for myself.

Becoming a single mom was terrifying. I felt isolated and overwhelmed, standing at the edge of a future filled with uncertainty. I had always envisioned raising a child in a two-parent household, especially since I grew up in a single-parent home and feared repeating that cycle. Yet there I was, holding my newborn and learning to trust myself in ways I never had before.

Being a single mom and finding strength taught me one powerful truth: I am enough.

The most difficult part wasn’t the sleepless nights or the financial pressure—it was the fear of failure. I questioned whether I could raise my son into a strong, grounded man on my own. I worried that not giving him a traditional family structure meant I was already letting him down. Over time, I learned that love, consistency, and presence matter far more than titles or appearances.

Despite the challenges, single motherhood has been deeply rewarding. My life may not look the way I once imagined, but my son is my greatest blessing. Every milestone, every embrace, every whispered “I love you, Mom” affirms why I keep going.

I haven’t faced many overt stereotypes, but that says more about how common single motherhood has become. Growing up, I often heard people say, “If you get pregnant, you’ll probably end up doing it alone.” That statement became my reality—but it also became the foundation of my resilience.

To anyone who questions single mothers: this life is not a sign of failure or irresponsibility. It is proof of endurance. I no longer seek validation from my son’s father—or from anyone else. My worth is not determined by who stayed or who left.

If I had to describe single motherhood in one word, it would be rewarding. And if I could reshape the narrative, I would say this clearly: Single Black moms represent strength, love, and sacrifice in its truest form.

Being a single mom and finding strength has shown me that my son is thriving—not in spite of me, but because of me. The frightened, uncertain woman I once was had no idea how powerful she already was.

Love your child. Love yourself. And trust that you are doing enough—because you are.
