Single Mom Defined, a photo essay and video series, provides a much more accurate definition about single Black motherhood than the one society presents. Often, when single Black mothers are discussed or Googled, they are crammed into the same stereotypical storyline when in fact they each took a unique path to parenthood.

Single Mom Defined launched as an interactive art exhibit at the 2018 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival and introduced visitors of all ages to positive images of 50+ mothers in the Pittsburgh region.

The creator, Heather Hopson, encourages all to celebrate motherhood and elevate the voices of African-American moms, who are often left out of conversations about raising America.
